Terms of use
VERSION 2026-10-26 · in effect since 2026-10-26
Scriptoria is a platform for Bible knowledge, games and study. These terms say what we promise to deliver, what we ask of you and what happens to what you write here. In short: the Bible text is free (in the public domain, or under an open license with credit, and one of them asks anyone who shares a changed version to keep the same license), your notes are yours, the leaderboard is taken seriously and we do not sell your data.
TRANSLATION: This translation is here for your convenience. The binding text is the Portuguese original, which prevails if the two ever differ.
NOTICE: This document describes precisely what the system does, but it has not yet been through legal review. If you are a lawyer and find a mistake, write to us: it is exactly the kind of message we want to receive.
1. WHO WE ARE AND WHAT THIS IS
Scriptoria is operated from Brazil and is available at scriptoria.digital. We offer Bible reading with a map and historical context, a daily quiz with a weekly leaderboard, an atlas of the first-century Mediterranean and, soon, the Codex (a deduction game).
By creating an account, or by using the site without one, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service; and if you disagree with something specific, write to us before you leave.
2. WHO CAN USE IT
Accounts are for people who are 13 or older. When you create an account, we ask for the year you were born (only the year), and it serves one purpose: to check this minimum age. It is not shown to anyone and is not used for anything else. We do not request identity documents: we ask, and responsibility for the information lies with the person who provides it.
People under 13 may not create an account, but they may read and play without one (section 3). Between the ages of 13 and 18, an account must be created with the knowledge and agreement of the person who holds parental responsibility. If we learn of an account belonging to someone under 13, we close it and delete it. Parents and guardians have a page of their own.
Live rooms. The person who creates a room is an adult with an account, who declares that they are 18 or older and responsible for the room, and who is accountable for the use they make of it with the people taking part, including for the supervision of the children who play in it. Joining a room does not require an account: each participant chooses a nickname, which appears only in that room. Offensive nicknames are refused, and the host may remove someone from the room and lock entry to it. There is no conversation between people in a room: only questions and answers. A room may be invite-only: those who receive the link or scan the host's QR code can join, and the room code alone does not open it; the host may change the invitation at any time. When a room is full, those who arrive later may join the audience, if the host's plan includes it: they see the questions and the scoreboard, without answering or scoring points.
3. YOUR ACCOUNT, AND PLAYING WITHOUT ONE
You may play, read and compete on the leaderboard without creating an account. In that case, we keep an anonymous session in your browser, and your position on the leaderboard remains valid for 72 hours. If you create an account later, what you have already done comes with you (your points, your time, your streak and what you have read) when you ask for it, by tapping "Keep my XP," or when you confirm, as you sign in, that you were the one who played on that device. On a device shared by several people, such as a church tablet, nothing that another person did without an account is added to yours without that confirmation. In the quiz, "Switch player" leaves the device ready for the next person.
If you have an account, your password is your responsibility. We store only a cryptographic hash of it, which means that not even we can read it, and also that we cannot recover it; we can only allow you to set a new one.
4. THE BIBLE TEXT
The default text in Portuguese is the Bíblia Portuguesa Mundial, in English the Berean Standard Bible and in Spanish the Reina-Valera 1909, all three in the public domain. We also offer the King James Version and the World English Bible, the Hebrew of the Westminster Leningrad Codex and the Greek of the Textus Receptus, all in the public domain (the King James Version, outside the United Kingdom); two texts under a CC BY 4.0 license: the Bíblia Livre and the Greek of the SBLGNT; and one under a CC BY-SA 4.0 license: the Palabra de Dios para ti, in Spanish.
We credit the source of each text where it appears, because saying where the text comes from is what earns trust. A public-domain text has no license that requires it; the CC BY 4.0 license does, and anyone who copies the Bíblia Livre or the SBLGNT from here must give the same credit. The CC BY-SA 4.0 license asks for the credit, which also says what was changed, and one more thing: anyone who changes the Palabra de Dios para ti, or puts it in a derivative work, and shares the result must share it under the same license.
When we correct or improve a passage, the change is recorded with its author, date and reason. Those edits are ours; in a text under CC BY-SA, such as the Palabra de Dios para ti, where today we change no word (we only remove the brackets with which it marks where the verses it leaves out would be, as the Sources page says), an edit of ours would carry the same license. The base text remains as its source left it, in the public domain or under the source's license, and you may use it from the original source on the same conditions.
The Bible geography data comes from OpenBible.info, under a CC BY 4.0 license, and crediting them is a legal obligation, not a choice. The outlines of the maps come from Natural Earth, which is in the public domain.
5. WHAT YOU WRITE HERE IS YOURS
Your notes, highlights, tags and study boards are yours. We claim no ownership of them, and we do not use them to train anything.
For the service to work, we need a limited license: to store them, to copy them between your devices and to display them back to you. It is the minimum that a notebook that syncs requires.
If you make a board public, this license extends to displaying it to anyone who opens the link, because that is what "public" means. Making it private again ends that part. You are responsible for what you publish, and we do not publish anything of yours on our own initiative.
6. FAIR PLAY
The leaderboard measures points and time, on the same challenge for everyone, with the clock kept on the server. One game per day counts toward the leaderboard. The archive remains playable as study material, with half the XP and off the leaderboard.
We may remove a game from the leaderboard when there are signs of cheating, and we may do so without notice. This is not discourtesy: a detailed notice teaches whoever is cheating to try another way. Those who play honestly never run into this rule. If you believe you were affected by mistake, write to us. We will look into it.
A paid plan gives no scoring advantage. No multiplier, no separate leaderboard for subscribers. Someone who arrives today, without an account and without paying, can finish first.
7. PLANS AND PAYMENT
There are three plans: Apprentice (free), Scribe and Teacher. There are no charges today: the service is under construction and everything that exists is free to use. When charging begins, we will give notice in advance, and you will not be charged for anything you have not subscribed to.
Each plan has its own limits (for example, how many boards and how many notes the Apprentice plan keeps), published on the plans page of your dashboard. Reaching a limit only holds back the next one: nothing you have already written is deleted, hidden or ceases to be yours, and a note written offline that goes over the limit is kept on your device, with its text available to copy, until there is room.
When there are charges, these rules, which follow from the law, will apply:
- Seven days to withdraw, counted from the date you subscribe, with a full refund, under Art. 49 of Brazil's Consumer Defense Code (Código de Defesa do Consumidor, Lei 8.078/1990).
- Cancellation at any time, from your own account, with no penalty and without having to call anyone.
- If you cancel, paid access continues until the end of the period already paid for. We do not give prorated refunds outside the seven days.
- Price changes announced 30 days in advance and effective only from the following period. The price you signed up for does not go up partway through.
- If you stop paying, the account returns to the Apprentice plan. Nothing you have written is deleted: notes, boards and reading history remain yours and remain accessible.
8. WHAT IS NOT ALLOWED
- Automating access to inflate the leaderboard, scrape the site's content or overload the service.
- Creating accounts in bulk to get around the limit of one game per day that counts toward the leaderboard.
- Publishing, on a public board or in any field visible to others, content that is unlawful, that incites violence or that exposes other people's data.
- Attempting to access another person's data, or to circumvent technical limits.
- Reselling access to the service without a written agreement.
Normal use of the service, including heavy use, including use by an entire group on a single tablet, is not abuse. The Teacher plan exists precisely for that case.
9. AVAILABILITY, AND WHAT WE DO NOT PROMISE
We do our best to keep the service up at all times, and we do not promise that it always will be. There may be maintenance, failures and interruptions. While the service is free, it is provided as is.
Historical and geographical content is presented with the uncertainty it carries: a date may be "approximate" and a location "debated," and the page says which is the case and where the information comes from. We are not a doctrinal or academic authority, and nothing here replaces your own study, pastoral guidance or primary sources.
10. TERMINATION
You may close your account whenever you wish. When you close it, we anonymize your personal data after a grace period; and we do not delete completed games, because deleting them would corrupt other people's standings on the leaderboard and a group's history. What remains is the result without the name.
We may suspend or close an account that violates these terms, with notice where possible, and immediately where there is a risk to third parties.
11. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for lost profits, for the loss of data you have not exported or for indirect damages arising from the use of the service. Where there are charges, our liability is limited to the amount you paid in the 12 months preceding the event giving rise to the claim.
This limitation does not apply to willful misconduct or gross negligence, nor to the rights that the Consumer Defense Code guarantees you and that cannot be excluded by contract.
12. LAW AND VENUE
Brazilian law applies. The courts of the consumer's domicile are designated as the venue for any dispute, as provided in Art. 101, I, of the Consumer Defense Code. Before that, write to us: almost everything can be resolved by email.
13. CHANGES TO THESE TERMS
When we change this document, the version at the top changes, and if the change is material, we notify you on your dashboard, with a summary of what changed, and ask for your agreement again. We keep a record of which version each person accepted and when. That is why the version is printed here and not in a footnote.
The Privacy Policy is part of these terms and explains in detail what data we process and why, and how you exercise your rights.
